Germans love their food service providers. One out of every two citizens frequents one of the country’s nearly 75,000 restaurants. The sector employs over 400,000 workers. As a strong partner of the food service and hotel industries, METRO has conducted its second survey of new business owners, in follow-up to the 2014 survey, asking them about their motives, goals and desires. An additional focus this year is to be found in the questions: How is the industry dealing with advancing digitisation? What wishes do consumers have with regard to digital services? To determine the attitudes of business founders, METRO and GfK jointly conducted an extensive study. The results are based on a September 2015 survey of 350 independent proprietors in the hotel and food services sector. An omnibus survey of 1,000 consumers on the topic of digitisation was additionally carried out in the same period.
